Dr Richard B. Michelson, 78 of Kansas City, MO died Tuesday morning,
December 6, at St. Joseph Hospital. Dr, Michelson was born in 1927 in
Detroit and resided in Kansas City since 1980. After graduating from
Bay City Central as Co-Valedictorian, he pursued his pre-medical and
medical studies at the University of Michigan obtaining his M.D.
degree cum laude in 1951. Shortly thereafter, he served as a
Lieutenant in the Navy Medical Corps and was stationed in Norfolk,
Virginia. He was a family practitioner and obstetrician for 20 years
in Flint, Michigan, having delivered 3,200 babies. He served with
Hurley Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital prominently. He was appointed
Chief Deputy Medical Examiner of Genesee County, Michigan for 18
years. At the age of 47, he was willing to change careers in search
of answers to healthcare problems. Dr. Michelson went back to school
and obtained a Master's at the University of Michigan, School of
Public Health and became board certified in General Preventive
Medicine. Throughout his career, he served on numerous medical boards
and medical associations. In 1980, he served as Medical Director of
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City for 10 years, and retired in
1996 from GEHA where for 4 years he was their first Medical Director.
He also enjoyed teaching as Clinical Associate Professor at both UMKC
and the University of Kansas Medical School. He loved the game of
bridge and was an avid player.
