Individual Note

A hatter by trade. In the Goniondz Memory Book an article by F.

Yitzchaky (Trestshansky) written in Yiddish describes "Yehuda the

Hatter (Herczeg), a Jew, a man of the people, a clever and hospitiable

person, full of humor, always with a smile on his lips and a good word

for everyone. They tell the following about Reb Yehuda: After the

first World War, when various refugees without idenity documents came

to Goniondz, Reb yehuda always testified on their behalf, and asserted

that they had been born in Goniondz. His testimony before the Council

at the city hall was taken as authoritive, and afterwards they were

honored with a good schnapps and some snacks. Reb Yehuda had

testified for too many people, and a committee from Bialystok came up

specially to investigate. Reb Yehuda explained to them that in the

town there was a society that attends every festive occasion and

circumcision, and that since he is the warden of this society, he

knows about everyone who was born in the shtetl."
